Working toward sustainable workplaces
We are committed to tackling the environmental impact of our business, and so have acted to reduce energy and water use and reduce the waste we send to landfill.
Our environmental policy sets out our intentions and our ISO 14001 certified environmental management system helps ensure we continue to improve on our environmental performance.
WHAT WE ARE DOING:
Setting goals and getting results
Haymarket began measuring its consumption of energy, water and waste sent to landfill in 2004. The impact of monitoring these things and taking simple steps to reduce their impact has resulted in significant changes. Each year we have achieved reductions, the only exception being a small rise in both water and energy use between 2005 and 2006. However, we still saw this as a good result given that the floor space occupied by Haymarket in Teddington grew by 40 per cent when Teddington Studios opened at the end of 2005, and our UK staff had swelled from 912 in 2004 to 1536 in 2007.

Our targets for 2009 in our UK offices are to reduce electricity use by 7.5 per cent, gas consumption by 9 percent, water use by 15 per cent, waste sent to landfill by 10 per cent and consumption of A4 copy paper by 15 per cent.
Reducing water use
Technology used to fit out Teddington Studios saved more than 2.9 million litres of water in 2006. And so achieving further cuts in water use felt like a tough task. However, we took what we had learned in Teddington and applied it to our Hammersmith buildings and saved a further 3,734,000 litres in 2007 – just shy of two Olympic swimming pools.
In 2008 we continued to make improvements at all our London sites and further reduced water use by 5,170,000 litres compared to 2007. Since 2005, despite growth in staff numbers and floor space, we have managed to cut our annual water use by 11.7 million litres – a 63 per cent cut on 2005 levels.
Reducing energy use
To save energy, we have improved equipment maintenance and our understanding of our heating and cooling systems. We have even employed in-house engineering specialists. While some may see this as an unnecessary expense, it’s meant huge efficiency savings and improved staff comfort.
Staff ‘switched off’ when our campaign asked them to turn off lights, monitors and PCs when not in use, and LED lighting technology has been introduced where appropriate. During 2008, we reduced our electricity use by 249,444 kilowatt-hours and gas use by another 194,738 kilowatt-hours. Combined, this reduced our carbon emissions by 170 tonnes.
We have consumed 524,536 kilowatt-hours less electricity and 1,084,076 kilowatt-hours less gas during 2007 and 2008, even while taking on more staff and office space. Cuts in that period saw our emissions arising from energy fall by 485 tonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide.
Recycling
Waste reduction is a top priority for Haymarket. Where we can’t eliminate the creation of waste we aim to recycle, leaving as little as possible to go to landfill. We have recycling processes in place for more than 15 different types of waste, including plastics, tin cans, aluminium cans, paper and cardboard, electrical equipment, batteries and toner cartridges.
When refurbishing our properties, recycling waste is a key concern. When we remove waste from our sites, we recycle 85 per cent on average. We also aim to use recycled products, where affordable, to help support the recycling loop. A recent refurbishment of our Bute Gardens property used more than 4000 square metres of carpet tiles made from recycled material. The old tiles were themselves recycled.
In 2008, through the introduction of recycling bins under desks and with support from our staff, waste sent to landfill dropped by 27 per cent. This is equivalent to about 822 cubic metres in landfill, and will have reduced our landfill-associated carbon emissions by 121 tonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide.
Using less office paper
We have created central printing areas to reduce the number of printers in our offices and discourage people from wasteful printing. We have also made more double-sided printers available. Combined with staff ‘thinking before they print’ these measures meant that our company used 1751 fewer reams of A4 paper in 2008.
Since 2005, our annual A4 paper use has fallen by 5342 reams, a drop of 33 per cent. This equates to 13,355 kilograms of paper, or a 267-metre-tall paper stack.
Making good travel choices
Since 2006, Haymarket has followed a green travel plan to encourage staff to use public transport, cycle, walk or car share where convenient. We opened up availability to our pool car fleet to save staff bringing a vehicle into work for business trips during the day. We installed numerous cycle racks, and run an annual Cycle to Work scheme through which staff can purchase discounted cycles while making a tax saving.
In 2009, we felt the time was right to review our travel plan and with the help of Transport for London and their A New Way to Work scheme we surveyed staff to identify the changes in travel patterns since 2006 and find more ways to further improve facilities for alternative travel modes.
We found that previous improvements to cycling facilities had indeed helped increase cycling numbers and that more facilities were now in need. We have since installed more cycling stands and shelters as well as 70 lockers and four new showers in our Hammersmith buildings. We have also run cycling events to help promote commuting by bike.
We also keep repair kits and tools at each office for use by cyclist and motorbike riders who get caught short with a puncture.
Getting staff involved
While tangible results are important for measuring the company’s environmental performance, staff perceptions are equally important.
For this reason we include the following statement within the annual staff survey: “Haymarket takes action to minimise the environmental impact of its activities.” When asked to indicate whether they strongly disagree, disagree, agree or strongly agree with this statement, 92 per cent of staff either agreed or strongly agreed. This question solicited the highest favourability score within the Culture and Values section of the survey.
Haymarket has created a Green Team to help drive and promote environmental improvement and carbon reduction, in conjunction with its carbon footprint project. The team comprises senior directors and operational staff members and is chaired by group deputy chairman Rupert Heseltine.
More than 30 staff members have also volunteered to be green champions. They aim to promote and support environmental initiatives among colleagues and provide feedback and improvement suggestions for the Green Team to act on.
Acting locally, worldwide
We have offices on five continents in places as diverse as Mumbai and Sydney. Naturally, each office does things differently. The actions outlined above apply to our UK offices, but Haymarket offices internationally are seeking to take locally appropriate steps to make their work more sustainable. In New York, for instance, Haymarket Media Inc recently audited its environmental performance.
