Haymarket Motoring scoops five Headlineauto awards

Tuesday night saw Haymarket’s Autocar and What Car? collect an impressive total of five trophies at the prestigious Headlineauto awards ceremony.  

Autocar picked up four awards on the evening, including the Best Automotive Website of the Year accolade for its recently relaunched and critically acclaimed Autocar.co.uk.  

Autocar associate editor Hilton Holloway fought off stiff competition to be crowned Journalist of the Year as well as News Writer of the Year for the third year running.

The panel praised ‘his understanding of underlying industry trends, his ability to ask the right questions and his engaging writing style that delivers informed opinion and context.’

Plaudits also went to Autocar editor-in-chief Steve Cropley, who walked away with the first ever Outstanding Contribution Award. After the independent panel of judges recognised the huge contribution Steve had made to help raise the profile of motoring journalism both with the public and within the industry.

Judges acknowledged that Steve is not only a fine writer but also a modest and tireless supporter of young motoring journalists, helping instigate the postgraduate Automotive Journalism MA course at Coventry University and being a great proponent of the Headlineauto Masterclass.

Autocar publisher Alastair Lewis said:   ‘These awards are voted for by a mix of our clients, contacts, readers and peers and as such provide a really strong indication of how well we are working and what high esteem our products and our team are held in amongst the industry.  To have won four key awards, including website of the year, following our hugely successful relaunch this year is a tremendous achievement up against some really stiff opposition.’

What Car? was praised by the judges for being ‘a magazine that knows what its readers want’ as well as forging itself in the role of ‘the people’s champion’, before being  awarded the prestigious title of Consumer Publication of the Year.

Established in 2008 the Headlineauto awards are designed to celebrate and recognise the very best in motoring journalism, writing and photography. Now in its fourth year, the 2012 awards were the most competitive yet with nominations up by more than 45% over last year.
