What Car?’s Car of the Year Awards are the most prized in the UK motor market.
Our expert team of road testers ensure that only cars which deliver dynamically are shortlisted for Awards in one of the 16 major categories, while running costs, depreciation and safety features are taken into account, ensuring that any Award winner delivers the best possible ownership experience to a potential buyer.
Of all the categories, the most sought-after prize is the What Car? Car of the Year Award. This is given to the car that proves itself as the best all-rounder from all categories.
The Awards take place in early January and attract more than 1000 of the industry’s most influential figures, including senior decision makers from car manufacturers, retailers and industry suppliers. They are recognised as the most influential accolades among car buyers in the UK and are highly coveted by the industry.
Of course, not every motorist wants to buy a new car, which is why What Car? also has a Used Car of the Year Awards that provides the same level of assurance to buyers.
There are seven award categories, arranged by segment, with vehicles picked by What Car?’s experts in consultation with reliability data from Warranty Direct.
Each category is split into two price points to recommend cars which are nearly new and those that are up to around three years old. There are separate reader awards, too.
The Used Car of the Year award winners are announced in September.
