Haymarket Media Group acquires The Press Awards in the UK, returning in 2023

The annual celebration of Britain’s best national and regional journalism will be produced by Haymarket on behalf of the News Media Association

The Press Awards, the annual celebration of Britain’s best journalism, will return in 2023 with a flagship central London event.

The awards will be produced by Haymarket Media Group on behalf of the News Media Association and will take place at London’s Westminster Park Plaza hotel on 8 March.

Dubbed the “Oscars of British journalism”, with a heritage spanning six decades, The Press Awards recognise excellence across 46 categories split into two distinct ceremonies – the Press Awards for the national media and the Regional Press Awards for the country’s local and regional news brands. As well as long-standing categories such as ‘Newspaper of the Year’, ‘Front Page of the Year’, ‘Columnist of the Year’ and the coveted ‘Scoop of the Year’, new categories will recognise young journalists, digital-first initiatives and excellence in reporting of diversity.

The Press Awards were inaugurated in 1963 and are established as the pinnacle of national and regional news journalism, fostering a friendly rivalry between newspapers and showcasing the vital importance of independent journalism.

The eligibility period for the 2023 awards is 1 January 2021 to 31 October 2022. The awards will formally launch the 10th June, with further information, a full list of categories and criteria and entry details available from the website at https://www.thepressawards.com

Owen Meredith, chief executive of the News Media Association, says: “These awards are the ones everyone working in news media today wants to win. They have a long and proud history, celebrating true excellence in the world of journalism, across print and digital platforms. At a time when access to trusted journalism has perhaps never been more important, The Press Awards bring our industry together to champion the importance of journalism to society and celebrate truly outstanding talent.”

The News Media Association (NMA) is the voice of UK national, regional and local news media titles in all their print and digital forms – a £4 billion sector read by more than 47 million people each month in print and online.

Philip Swinden, managing director of Haymarket Business Media, added: “We are delighted to be partnering with the News Media Association on their iconic Press Awards. We look forward to organising an exciting event that celebrates the best work in UK journalism – particularly where interest in local/national news and consumption levels across all channels has never been greater.”

Haymarket is one of the largest organisers of awards in the UK and globally with over 60 national/international schemes across sectors such as motoring, media, business, marketing, communications, healthcare, environment, leadership, HR, supply chains, architecture and built environment. These include some of the UK’s most prestigious awards nights in the media/comms industry such as Media Week, PR Week, Campaign Media and British Media Awards.
